Staying Creative with Anjelica Alubowicz

Inspired by her Black and immigrant roots, Anjelica Alubowicz's work honors the necessity and functionality of art and craft in these communities.

All items are hand sculpted with intention and joy, giving her body-centric work a more human feel.

Tell us who you are.

My name’s Anjelica. I’m a ceramic and textile artist living in Los Angeles.

What does home mean to you?

It’s a safe space where I can let my guard down. Honestly, home means never having to hold in my farts :,)

How do you rest, restore, and reenergize?

Talking to friends and family, going on walks, dancing, watching tv/movies, therapy(!), listening to music, taking naps, and spending quality time with my boo and our dog.

What inspires you to create?

People watching, conversations, music, movies, nature, clothing, books.

How did you become the artist you are today?

I was lucky to grow up in a household that promoted creativity. Whether it was playing music, drawing, sewing, carpentry, making up dances, gardening, creating new recipes, we were always making something out of nothing.

What advice can you give to artists who are trying to find their voice?

Spend more time making than planning. It’s easy to get stuck attempting to work out every little detail before you start a project but it only helps to limit the amount of time you have to actually create.

Of course, projects take some planning but my favorite pieces have come out of times when I just said “fuck it” and tried something completely new without much forethought.
