Working on Your Craft with Altarik of homa studios

Tell us who you are.

I am Altarik Banks - founder and design principal of homa studios. A native of east orange, new jersey.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I first stumbled into the field of design and making through an Innovation Design course taught at my university. I then spent my late nights and mornings working on my craft getting a little better each day. I love the fact that I can make something and it goes on to live in someone else's life.

How would you describe your style of work?

If I would describe my style of work I would say beautifully simple, curvy.

Who or what are your biggest influences?

I take my biggest influences from everything that's around me - from scenery, objects, people and places - it all has an impact and I am absorbing it all in.

What does home mean to you?

Home to me means you're safe haven, a place that feels warm and welcoming.

How would you describe your home's personality?

I would say that my home personality is very simple and intentional. I have just enough stuff but never too much.

How do you rest, restore, and re-energize?

I like to take rest days, have coffee and people watch, get lost in the big apple (new york)

What advice can you give to aspiring artists and designers?

The greatest advice I can give to aspiring artists and designers is to go for it! Anything that you want to do, you just have to figure out how to do it - so that would be figuring out the players involved in what you want to do, what has been done already, and how the work can be improved. I would also say have a long-term outlook on success because all overnight success is 15 years in the making.
